I am really confused about the situation. I have seen five year olds and younger children having tantrums in stores, assaulting parents and staff. I have seen children act out at Chucky Cheese because they don’t want to go home. Their little hands grabbing around objects trying to steady themselves against their parent’s attempts to bring them home. I have never seen any store security or police officers handcuff those children.
While I was a graduate student teaching a college chemistry lab class, one of my students started cussing and throwing things around. After seeing the students move away from him, I instructed the class to leave the room and asked one of the students to contact the head of the chemistry lab department. I tried to reason with the young man, as he started throwing bottles of acid and other potentially dangerous items. I was able to get him calm for a few minutes. When the head of the department came into the room, the young man went ballistic again. Campus security and the police were called. We formed a human barricade to stop him from having access to the chemicals. He started throwing chairs and desks. We all watched. Someone looked through his medical files and recognized that he was bipolar. They sent in counselors to help him and encourage him to leave the room. Situation was resolved. He was not placed in handcuffs. This incident occurred in 1998, less than 10 years ago.
The above case clearly warranted handcuffs an adult male in the vicinity of hazardous chemicals putting himself and the whole building in danger. A kindergartener throwing a tantrum and acting out in a room with a cameraman and 2 teachers gets handcuffs. I don’t agree.
Thank God Helen Keller was not born in this day and age. She surely would have been incarcerated from her abuse of Anne Sullivan, her teacher or perhaps heavily sedated with drugs so that no one would have to be bothered with her. Maybe she would not have to worry because she was not a minority.
What is your opinion about what happened to the 5 year old Florida child that was handcuffed?
