here is a report (to Abe Lincoln) that touches on a number of factors you have discussed here and at Dar Kush - intelligence, culture, family, honesty, the assimilation of freed slaves into community, treatment by whites, dignity, etc. There are statistics on what they had, how they were educated, religious preferences - I found it interesting:
