I’m working off of the Lifewriting booklet right now, and I just finished writing down the page 9-11 exercises of applying the hero’s journey to my own life. It was pretty easy for the most part, those were things I had already thought about and planned out in my head, with the sole exception of 3-c; Future History. “Write the story of your life, starting today, and continuing until the day you die.” That . . . gave me the wiggles. I mean, I know I’m going to die, but writing my life story until that point just drives it that much further home, you know? I overcame my own chattering monkey voice of things I could do instead by beginning to write it in the third person,
“Mike Ralls experienced some unease at the prospect of writing what he wants the story of his life to be, from this day to the day he dies, but he pushed on anyways. And did it.”
That helped me flow on for about twelve hundred words of what I want the story of my life to be like. There was one moment that really surprised me, I was writing down what came next and it just came out and I was, “Woe. Do I really want that? I mean, I’ve tossed that around in my head a couple of times, but is that actually something I want to work towards?” and looking in myself, at this point in my life, yea, I would. Interesting, and an exercise that can definitely help someone focus in on the long term and what they need to do in the short term to get there.
How was everyone else’s experience with this exercise? How did you feel about writing down the future of your life?
