I just read this article from TRUTHOUT: www.truthout.org/issues_06/031507LB.shtml Can we ever get rid of slavery? It makes one prone to despair, and to wonder whether meaningful social change on a global scale is ever possible.

I believe that it is possible, but happens slowly. For tens of thousands of years, slavery in one form or another has existed. The drive to abolish it is only a couple of hundred years old. It is now underground (in most places) and not the wholesale chattle slavery that existed in the U.S.--not to diminish the pain to the victimized, but this is more like endentured servitude. At any rate, slavery is so obviously profitable that I find laughable those who try to say that it would have collapsed on its own. What a load of crap. It might have changed and mutated, but nothing less than social action would end slavery. Economically, we'd still have it to this day.
