I’ve heard, or rather, read on many sites, a common notion many screenwriters share, that selling a script is next to impossible. I’d like to test the truth of that theory, practically, by attempting to sell a script. It’s a short script, ten pages long, but I have no idea how I can go about placing the script up for sale. Anyone have an idea how I can get this script read?

First, how can it be "next to impossible" when a dozen new movies (cable, DVD and theatrical) come out every week? That's just absurd. Is it hard? Of course it is! But for every movie released, at least ten scripts are sold...probably more. Now then...about your script. What exactly is the market for a ten minute movie? Something on the web, perhaps. So you'd need to find who is making 10-minute movies, and get in touch with them.

Selling a script is very difficult but not impossible. In my experience as a reader I have seen wonderful scripts go absolutely nowhere and some scripts that were marginal at best sell. What makes the difference? Most often its tenacity and continuing to work the material, rewrite and most of all continuing to get it in front of people. Most people (myself included) will write a script and then send it out and then shelve it as soon as its rejected. Those who succeed don't stop there. They continue to work and they continue to market. I feel that if one stays at it long enough and continues to grow and work that eventually success will come along. The question is how long will it take? Who knows.
That said, I don't think there are many markets where a ten page script is going to sell. You might want to try indie producers - first time filmmakers looking for a short as an example of their work.

What is your market? If you can find a venue for 10-minute scripts, you can try there. Is it impossible to sell a script? Then...how do you account for new movies released every week? Difficult, yes, but then, so is playing for professional sports, or being elected to high office. But people do it.
