Oh boy. I have been thinking about IF for weeks. Today I began. And boy, are the demons coming out to howl. Ego is alternately hammering and seducing me.
Question: I honestly can't tell whether the caution I feel is legitimate, or whether it's my ego trying to get me to stop almost before I begin. Should I ease into this more gradually? Maybe a 24-hour fast rather than 36? Should I only fast one day a week to start, then go to every other day?
I'm 60-70 pounds overweight-- clearly, missing a day of food won't kill me. It's the emotional issues, the ego, that wants to keep me still. I wonder, would starting slower be easing the strain, or would it be giving in to it?

Have you had a chance to read through the free PDF book at fast-5.com/ ? The sections on Goal-setting and Adjustment led me to try scaled partial-day fasts first, and then move on to alternate day fasting. - I cannot recommend it enough as great starting outline. -=-

And talk with your doctor. If you get the go-ahead, try alternating days--but let yourself have perhaps fruit on the alternate days at first, slowly reducing to just water or diluted juice. And exercise: walking and the Five Tibetans if nothing else. Also try meditating to get to know those inner demons better. I promise that they devil you in other arenas of your life. Having your demons in a cage can be a fantastic learning experience.

I have noticed that on fasting days I often become salt deficient. It took me a long time to figure out that this was what was causing my headaches on many fasting days. They begin late in the day. Taking a little water or juice with added salt solves the problem. At first I thought it was a low blood glucose problem, but eating fruit did not help, whereas salt solves the problem. Has anyone else had this experience? Is there some minumum amount of other nutrient that is needed to protect one's stomach when ingesting salt? I am remembering that one cannot drink seawater because of the danger of stomach damage.

Drinking a little mild saline is no big deal. The problem with salt water is that you need water to process the salt--you end up dehydrated if the salt content is as high as sea water. Otherwise, you're just replacing the electrolytes, like Gatorade. Perfectly fine. But be careful of too much salt, across the board...

I have found that I can chase similar headaches away with one of the zero-cal emergen-c fizzy packets. ... Emergen-C Lite with MSM is what I take.... mmmm, might be a placebo, but it works for me for chasing off the occasional fasting headache.
